Building Better Managers Podcast Episode #24: Women and Leadership - A Time to Celebrate

Susan Colantuono, known for her TED talk "The Career Advice You Probably Didn't Get," shares the challenges in getting more women into positions of leadership, and how to build the business, strategic and financial skills to help you reach your goals.

In this episode:

Meet Susan:

  • Background

The Impact of Kamala harris

  • The impact that Kamala Harris can have on women in leadership is huge and multi-generational. Having her at the top of the US government, delivers incredible role modeling for girls & women.
  • And the other impact is on business DEI (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion) efforts.

The Two Great Challenges Getting More Women Into Positions of Leadership

  • One is managers' perceptions about women, and their potential for leadership.
  • Another is women's own readiness for upward mobility
  • Then there's the missing 33%: that has to do with the perception that women aren't "business savvy," that they don't have financial acumen, or can't speak the language of the numbers of business, and that we aren't very good at strategy.
  • So for those that do lack business, strategic and financial acumen, it's crucial to get training in coaching in those areas.

Susan's Definitition of Leadership

  • "Leadership is using the greatness in you to achieve and sustain extraordinary outcomes by engaging the greatness in others."

Meeting the Expectations of the C-Suite

  • It's not just about what you want to tell them - It's what they want to hear, and what vehicle they want to hear it in.
  • We can get caught in our head with the story we want to tell. But what's the story that people need to hear?

The Right Leadership Skills & How to Build Them

  • The 3 difference makers are: Business, Strategic and Financial.
  • First, capitalize on your relationship with your manager. When it comes to working with your manager, encourage him or her to talk about the metrics that they're measured on, and what they have to report up the organization. You can begin to build connections between what you do every day, and your key performance indicators, KPIs, and what's going on at higher levels
  • Second, think about developing mentors inside and outside of the company. Reaching out to mentors and asking someone who's good at business acumen,  someone who has a reputation for being good at strategy, and someone who has financial acumen. Your manager might be able to do some of that, but maybe not all of it, so mentors can be inside or outside of the company.
  • Third, utilize coaches.
